The Golden Pharos Bhd (GPB) Group produces timber doors namely solid doors, engineered doors, high end doors and related components of doors. Apart from that the Group also produces tempered safety glass, tempered sheet glass for glazed door production, sawn timber, plywood and garden furniture.
The core business of doors was taken over from Golden Pharos Wood Industries Sdn Bhd, which had started operations in 1980. Manufacturing facilities and warehouse are located in Kapar, Klang. Approx. 25,000 doors are produced each month, 60% of which are engineered doors and the balance, solid panelled and glazed doors. The doors are marketed in the UK, US, Europe, Australia and South Korea. The tempered sheet glass is also produced both for the local architectural glass market and the serial glass export market.
The Group has a marketing and distribution arm in the UK and US, and is the first Malaysian door manufacturer to have a substantial equity control over its major overseas distributors.
Production of tempered glass was entered into in May 1992. The plant, located at Telok Panglima Garang Industrial Site near Banting, is capable of producing 20,000 sq m of tempered glass per month. The second phase glass production to supply architectural glass and shower screens for domestic buildings and the construction industry, was implemented in November 1992. Production capacity is approx. 120,000 sq m of glass per annum.
GPB became a fully integrated timber corporation with the acquisition of Permint Timber Corporation Sdn Bhd in March 1996. With this acquisition, the Group is geared towards playing a major role in the export of sawn timber, plywood and related timber products. The forest concession area is in the process of certification by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), which would bring recognition of sustainable management by the Group of forest resources, a key factor for European customers.
The Group underwent a rationalisation exercise in 1998. The exercise involves the creation of two divisions which are housed under two wholly-owned subsidiaries specifically for the manufacture of timber doors and the production of tempered glass.
